The Ekka is one of Queensland’s most loved annual events, bringing with it showbags, rides, and of course, dazzling nightly fireworks displays. While these colourful spectacles delight crowds across Brisbane, they can be terrifying for pets who don’t understand the sudden loud bangs and flashing lights.
Why fireworks stress pets out
Animals, especially dogs and cats, have acute hearing and can become extremely anxious during fireworks. Common signs of distress include shaking, hiding, excessive barking or meowing, panting, and trying to escape. In worst-case scenarios, some pets can injure themselves or run away in fear.
How to keep your pet calm during the Ekka fireworks
1. Plan ahead
Know the fireworks schedule and try to keep your pet indoors during the display time. For the Ekka, fireworks generally start around 6pm to 8pm, so a quiet evening routine is ideal.
2. Create a safe space
Set up a cosy area in your home where your pet feels secure. This could be a crate, laundry, or their favourite room with closed curtains and soft bedding.
3. Use calming tools
Pet-safe calming sprays, pheromone diffusers, or anxiety wraps can help reduce stress. Playing soft music or white noise can also muffle the sound of fireworks.
4. Stay calm yourself
Pets pick up on your energy. Staying relaxed and acting normally helps reassure them that there’s nothing to fear.
5. ID and microchip
In case your pet does escape, make sure they have a collar with ID tags and are microchipped with up-to-date contact details.
Consider a vet consult for anxious pets
If your pet has a history of severe anxiety during storms or fireworks, speak with your vet in advance. They may recommend calming supplements or prescription medication to help them cope.
The Ekka should be a celebration for all, including our four-legged family members. With some planning and patience, you can help ensure your pet stays safe, calm, and cared for during this exciting week.
